What I focused on when building Fit For Coach

Behind the appBy Tamás BenedekOct 9, 20265 min read

Five decisions behind Fit For Coach: free for clients, faster than a text message, only what saves time, meeting clients where they are, and respecting their data.

When I started building Fit For Coach, I wrote down a few rules. Not features, rules. Almost every decision since then has gone back to one of them.

1. Clients never pay

A coach's clients shouldn't need a subscription to train with their coach. If the client app costs money, many clients never install it, and the coach is back to sending plans in a chat.

So the client app is free, always. Coaches pay based on how many clients they coach, and the first client is free too.

2. Faster than a text message

If logging a workout takes longer than typing “done” in a chat, people will type “done” in a chat. That was the bar.

Every daily action had to be a tap or two: tick off the workout, tick off the meal, see what's next. The detailed stuff is there when you want it, but it never stands between a client and the next set.

3. Only what saves a coach time

It's easy to add dashboards nobody opens. I kept asking one question instead: does this save a coach time this week?

AI-drafted weekly plans made the cut, because writing a full week of training and meals from scratch is slow, and the coach can still change everything before it goes out. The Full Report made the cut, because eight weeks of progress in one tap is exactly what you need before a progress conversation. Plenty of other ideas didn't.

If a feature doesn't give a coach time back, it doesn't belong in the app.

4. Meet clients where they are

Not every client wants another app. Some prefer paper. So a coach can manage a client without the app: log their workouts and weight, send the week as a PDF, and invite them when they're ready.

Coaching also happens in a lot of languages, so the app speaks seven: English, Hungarian, Romanian, Spanish, German, French and Portuguese. A coach and each client can each use their own.

And because many coaches already have years of history in spreadsheets, you can import past workouts from Excel or CSV, so a client's progress starts with real data instead of a blank page.

5. Respect the data

Training logs, body weight and nutrition are personal. Fit For Coach is hosted in the EU, the app contains no advertising trackers, and we never sell personal data. You can delete your account at any time.

What's next

The best ideas so far have come from coaches using the app. If something is missing in your week, tell me at info@fitforcoach.app. I read every message.
